Early this year, a large ferronickel smelter in Sulawesi, Indonesia expanded its phase II capacity. The local tropical marine climate is harsh. The smelting workshop also has high temperatures and dust. The client set strict requirements for their 20 newly purchased double-girder crane gear motors. The drive units for the crane and trolley traveling mechanisms became the focus of technical discussions.
The traditional split drive plan uses “crane gear motors plus couplings plus reducers”. It occupies much space and has a high failure rate under frequent reverse impacts. After many technical exchanges and site simulations, the HSCRANE team recommended vertical three-in-one gear motors. They are designed for heavy loads and integrate drive gear motors, hardened reducers, and electromagnetic brakes. A total of 80 drive units, including spares, recently arrived in Indonesia. They have been successfully installed and debugged.

On-site working condition difficulties and HSCRANE solutions
During the project, the technical team mainly overcame the following three core pain points:
●Extremely limited installation space: The client’s new end carriage design is very compact. The lateral space for drive units is less than 400mm. These gear motors use a vertical flange installation structure. As shown in factory photos, the reducer shell bolts vertically to the end carriage. This connects directly via a thick base flange. The exposed top large gear meshes directly with the wheel group’s gear ring. This design compresses the lateral size to the extreme. It completely eliminates concentricity adjustment problems caused by couplings.
●High-frequency starting and precise positioning requirements: Smelting feeding operations require cranes to jog frequently. The positioning must be very precise. We chose DC electromagnetic disc brakes inside the gear motors. They have a millisecond-level response time. Inside the gearbox, we use carburized and quenched hardened helical gears. Tests show the crane runs very smoothly under full load. Brake slip is controlled within a minimal range. This effectively reduces the risk of crane rail gnawing.
●Harsh environment resistance and long-term anti-corrosion: Indonesia has high island salt fog and smelter dust. We applied special sandblasting to these green cast iron shells before leaving the factory. This rust removal reached the Sa2.5 level. We also applied three layers of marine-grade anti-corrosion paint. All junction boxes and seals use high-temperature resistant fluororubber. This ensures internal gear oil does not leak under long-term high temperatures.
Delivery and customer feedback
To ensure safe transnational transport, these 80 vertical three-in-one gear motors use fumigation-free wooden boxes. They are fully enclosed with internal anti-rust films and vacuum desiccants. After the equipment arrived in Indonesia, HSCRANE sent senior electrical engineers via video link. They guided local workers to complete inverter parameter setting and mechanical docking.
Currently, these distinct “HSCRANE green” drive units have run smoothly in Indonesia for three months. The client’s equipment department head stated clearly in a recent return email. “The HSCRANE vertical gear motors have solid workmanship and high transmission efficiency. The running noise is lower than European brands we used before. It completely exceeded our expectations.”
